Star Oils is a small operation located in Somerton, Somerset that will happily collect any used oil, including such oils as vegetable oil, sunflower oil, palm oil and ground nut oil. Whether it's solid or liquid, a large stockpile or single drum. Or if you'd like a one off collection or a regular service, we'll gladly take your waste oil off your hands. We'll even pay you a small sum for it.
For more information about what we do, or to book a collection get in touch and we'll respond as soon as we can.
Biodiesel Conversion
All the oil collected by Star Oils is converted into biodiesel. This is done by a process called transesterification. The original oil molecule is split apart into component parts - namely glycerol and methyl esters. The methyl esters are what constitutes biodiesel - the liquid is sufficiently chemically similar to diesel that it can be directly substituted in most engines.
The glycerol is drained as a waste product. This is burnt in a specially designed burner which heats the oil to a temperature suitable for reaction, thereby minimising the electricity consumption of our plant.
Like to know more?
There is much misinformation around concerning biodiesel. Properly made biodiesel with no by-products or reactants left in the finished product is safe for use in almost every diesel engine. Unfortunately not everyone makes biodiesel to these high standards.
Much more can be learned on various internet sites. The Goatindustries Forum and the BioPowered wiki are good places to start.
